Why is learning design having an impact in Indian higher education?

Learning design is reshaping the way knowledge is imparted and acquired by initiating a shift away from ‘broadcasting information’ and towards ‘facilitating learning’. This evolution is driven by a recognition that students are individuals with diverse learning needs. The impact of COVID and AI has produced a growing recognition of the benefits that digital technologies can bring to learning. Responding effectively to these developments requires comprehensive knowledge of the critical role of pedagogy in academic success.

How can learning designers help Indian faculty?


1. Providing training and guidance

By equipping faculty with these skills, learning designers empower them to create engaging and impactful learning experiences.

2. Supporting curriculum development 

Learning designers collaborate with faculty to design and refine curriculum, ensuring that it aligns with learning objectives and incorporates innovative pedagogical approaches. This partnership helps faculty stay at the forefront of educational trends and ensures that the curriculum remains dynamic and relevant. Effective collaboration also reduces faculty workload while increasing consistency and quality in the creation of learning assets, assessment and experiences.

3. Introducing inclusive assessment

Learning designers can assist faculty in developing inclusive assessment methods that align with learning objectives. While faculty are experts in their field, they often have little knowledge of the barriers to learning that badly-designed assessments can create. Involving learning designers in the desigin of assessments can increase student achievement by creating inclusive assessment rubrics that reduce and remove barriers. Learning designers  can also provide advice and guidance on the suitability of existing and emerging technologies for assessment, and how to adapt assessments to make them more accessible for students.
